In Raku pottery, the fire creates the pattern through a dramatic process of fire, smoke, and air. After being glazed and heated to over 1000°C, the piece is removed from the kiln whilst red-hot and placed on a bed of wood shavings. The fire ignites and then covered to form a smoky, oxygen-starved atmosphere in which the magic happens
